Touched by gorillas – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

6 minutes of essential video viewing from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda!

One man’s experience with mountain gorillas. It gets riveting after the first minute or so; completely natural and amazingly touching.

Is the mountain gorilla toast? We are doing our best to make sure they’re not by helping promote eco tourism and walking with gorillas.

But it’s tricky…

This video so clearly demonstrates how lovable and gentle the mountain gorilla’s can be, and how vulnerable. Each family lives in a group of about 10 with a silverback in charge. Now he is a jolly big fellow and you daren’t look him in the eye. To do so would be seen as a challenge and you’d be beaten back into submission … if you were a gorilla. Not sure how you’d fare as a human so the best thing is to look down and not take chances.

These thick coated primates need to eat about 40 pounds of vegetarian grub a day. That’s a lot of stems, leaves and shoots to gather. Its stands to reason that their survival plan depends on protecting the forests they live in. And this is where the pressure is, keeping humans out of the forests and leaving enough of the indigenous forest in its natural state, for the mountain gorillas to live off. These beautiful animals don’t survive in captivity.

The local rangers and guards who protect these animals, have made enormous sacrifices in times of war and peace. At present the mountain gorilla patch in the DRC Congo is a no go area. Fortunately things are looking up in Uganda and Rwanda, with gorilla numbers on a slight increase. Since the females only give birth every three to five years, a female will only give birth to between 3 to 8 babies.

Uganda’s not just about gorillas …see some notes on Bwindi, and more on primate safaris, gorillas/chimps/birds & butterflies!
