Vilanculos
This is one of the most diverse tourist areas you can visit in Mozambique. Vilanculos is a small town on the coast, with easy access to the Bazaruto Archipelago and it is also near to Maputo, making it an ideal place to stop on your way to or from either of these two areas.
There are several attractive places to stay here, and they all have good restaurants. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants in the town itself, some of which overlook the sea for some truly beautiful sundowners, others which sell traditional Mozambican cuisine. Varanda is a restaurant on the dunes that overlook the bay towards the Bazaruto Archipelago, with the beach where all the fishing dhows land being directly below it. From here you can watch the catch of the day being sorted and divided for market, as well as see some spectacular sunsets. There is no menu; just a chef who listens to what you feel like, and will try throw something together for you!
North Mozambique is a fair journey away, but offers the great Niassa Reserve - a good animal and bird destination if you want a bit more of a safari experience.

Ideal combinations using Vilanculos as an access hub, are the lovely islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago in the Benguerra Channel. Vilanculos is also used as the connection point between Mozambiques beaches and safaris in South Africa.
