Cape Winelands

The Cape Winelands are the longest wine route in the world, and with a large choice of places to visit, from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, travelling via Oudtshoorn and the Garden Route, it’s the wine enthusiasts’ first port of call.

The best time to sample the delights of the wine cellars and estates on route is the summer: not only is the weather fantastic, but the grapes are ripe for harvest, and you can partake in some of the fruit picking yourself! The vineyards also grow other fruit, adding flavoursome cherries, berries and various other fruits, and these can be picked as well. With over 200 cellars in the region, wine tasting is the most obvious occupation, and some of the best wines in the world can be sampled and compared in their place of origin.

While on the route, can enjoy the other activities that are offered; these are numerous and enjoyable, the perfect way to ensure you enjoy the journey up Route 62. With game viewing on game reserves, canoeing, 4×4 trails, horse-riding, hiking, mountain rock pool swimming…the list goes on, and all are geared toward getting the most out of your trip in one of the most scenic places in the world.

For the adrenaline junky, sky-diving, gliding, canoeing, abseiling and climbing are some of the many things you can experience, and with the towering mountains in the region, some of the best places in Africa to try these out are located here. There is also a river that can be enjoyed throughout the year, which has white water rafting with rapids reaching up to Grade 5. It is very unusual to be able to do this year round, and if you are looking for rafting but wanting to travel out of season, this is the perfect place to try it. Have a look at the North West Province if adventure is what you’re looking for and you’re travelling on the other side of the country.
