Kariba dam opens 4 gates - 11 March 2010

Char Ward from our Kariba office took this photograph yesterday 10th March as four water gates in Lake Kariba's dam opened at a 1/4 of their available openings. All four gates remained open for about 2 minutes and poured tons of water down into the Lower Zambezi River, towards Mana Pools National Park and onwards to Cabora Basa Dam. Two gates are still open releasing excess water out of the lake.
These flood waters are important to the regeneration of the Mana Pools National Park as it floods inland bringing nutrition, seeds and welcome water onto the Mana floodplain.
The best time for visiting Mana Pools is from May to November although a lot of our guests enjoy canoeing over the Christmas period. See our canoe safaris for an exhilirating range of canoeing activities. Not only is canoeing good in this area, our walking safaris are an excellent way to discover this World Heritage site.
