Safari and Beach holidays in Africa
Safari beach holidays in Africa – one of the more popular mainstream combinations between June and October. Traditionally some time in the bush with a coastal break before or after. Why be traditional when you could get some time in the bush combined with one of Africa’s inland lakes? A perfect way to get the best out of Africa.
Safaris can be hard work, even despite the fascinating wildlife and scenery. Dawn starts and long hot days of game drives on dusty, bumpy tracks make it a tiring prospect. So, a few days of relaxation at the beach afterwards should wash away the aches and pains. Not only that, it will provide the chance to explore some of Africa’s magnificent coastlines and picture-postcard white sand beaches before returning home.
Safari and beach options in East, southern and Central Africa
Popular combinations include a safari in Tanzania’s renowned Northern Circuit. This includes a loop of Tarangire, Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, followed by a few days on Zanzibar, steeped in Swahili culture and seemingly never-ending beaches. Here, you can take a dhow cruise to deserted sandbanks, swim with dolphins or simply amble along the shore exploring pools left behind by the Indian Ocean’s sweeping tides. Other well-known bush and beach destinations include Kenya, South Africa and Mozambique.
A lesser-known option is Malawi, with beautiful National Parks like Majete; now restored to the status of a Big Five reserve once again. Another option is Liwonde in the south, combined with spectacular lakeside beaches and islands of Lake Malawi. These offer water sports and scuba diving in clear waters, where it’s possible to see the famous cichlids. In fact, there are more varieties of fish here than in any other lake on Earth.
There’s even more when we consider the gin-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. The second largest body of fresh water on the planet. A mile deep with a pH of 8.0 meaning zero algal growth and home to around 500 species of endemic cichlids. It’s from these deep waters that the Mahale Mountains rise up through verdant forests up to Mount Nkungwe – a rich haven for bugs, butterflies and birds, also home to around 700 wild chimpanzees. On top of this it’s a relatively short flight into one of Africa’s truly wild gems – Katavi National Park. Arguably one of the best safari combinations in East Africa – it’s a safari and beach combo too!
