Lower Zambezi River - Kariba to Chirundu - 3 days/2 nights

This semi-participatory canoe safari options begins and ends in Kariba (we can meet you in Lusaka and transfer you to Kariba); we recommend spending the night prior to trip departure in Kariba town. This is a self-contained safari. All equipment and food is carried in the canoes and there is no vehicle back up apart from pick-up and drop off. They are to a small extent participatory; however the guides do the cooking and washing up.
Where is it?
This canoe safari takes place between Kariba Gorge and Chirundu on the Lower Zambezi River.
What is the best time of year to go?
All year bearing in mind the wettest time of the year is late Nov to end of March.
This canoe safari departs on a Tuesday/Saturday and Sunday.
How to get there
The price includes picking up and returning to Kariba town in Zimbabwe.
There are various means of getting to Kariba, all of which your consultant can assist you with:
By air charter from Lusaka (Zambia) or Harare (Zimbabwe)
By road from Lusaka (we can arrange this at extra cost). We will collect you from your hotel in Lusaka and transfer you to a lodge / hotel of your choice in Kariba the day prior to your canoeing safari.
We will collect you from your hotel in Kariba, and take you to the office for your briefing which will be given to you the morning your safari departs. After your briefing you will be asked to sign an Indemnity Form.
Tips and Notes
EXPERIENCE AND FITNESS
No previous experience needed however a reasonable level of fitness is required.
CANOE SPECIFICATION
The canoes are Canadian-style two-man canoes that are 5.5 metres long and 0.92 metres wide. There 5 buoyancy tanks so the canoe does not sink if overturned or damaged. The canoes have proper seats with backrest and canvas cushions. Canoes are very stable and can carry up to 420kgs with ease. The paddles are American Carlisle, lightweight single-bladed.
You will be able to leave excess baggage and your passport in the Kariba office before you depart. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PASSPORT ON THE RIVER WITH YOU!
You will be able to purchase extra drinks in Kariba before you depart as a limited amount are supplied by your guide.
The price EXCLUDES National Parks fees and River usage fees. Your consultant will let you know how much to take and this is paid in cash to National Parks direct whilst canoeing.
Zambezi Canoe overnight campsite
Overnight stops are on islands or the river bank and usually on a sandy beach. All the equipment is provided and carried on the canoes during the day. Luggage is kept to a minimum of 10kgs per person.
Bed mats with sleeping bags and liners are provided and the zipped tents are made of mosquito proof netting. There are no ablution facilities, washing is done in the river and a spade with toilet paper and matches are provided.
All food is supplied and meals are of a good standard. The meat and poultry dishes are pre-cooked and frozen. Food supplies carried by one rig will last for a 5-day safari; any longer trips are re-supplied either in Chirundu or Mana Pools. Breakfast / brunch usually consists of fruit, eggs, bacon or sausages, beans or tomato relish, bread (toast), marmalade, tea, and coffee. Lunch consists of cold meats and salads, cheese, biscuits, pickles and rolls. Dinners consist of a variety of meat and vegetable dishes.
Carribea Bay Hotel and Casino
Situated on the Lake Kariba shoreline with southerly views across to Matusadona National Park and the Zambezi escarpment in the east, is Caribbea Bay. This Sardinian-style resort with its sprawling complex is reminiscent of a Mediterranean resort with facilities and entertainment for the whole family. This hotel makes an ideal overnight stop before or after a canoe safari on the Lower Zambezi river or Mana Pools National Park.
Caribbea Bay offers guests a sun-filled holiday in relaxed comfort. Linger over sundowners on the pool deck, enjoy an informal dinner in the restaurant or play the tables at the intimate casino.
The hotel has 80 attractively furnished deluxe suites and casitas which are fully air-conditioned. Guests can cool off in any of the two swimming pools, whilst children can play on the small sandy beach, in the playground, amusement centre or on the waterslide. The resort has two restaurants and three bars. Conference facilities for up to 100 people are available.
