Masai Mara and Amboseli National Parks - 5 nights/6 days

This excellent short stay safari combines the two most popular parks in Kenya. You will stay in small bush camps where quality of guiding is the highest priority. These camps are as individual as the different habitats they occupy and while tented, have en-suite bathrooms and all the comforts so necessary in this environment.

Our Amboseli camp is just outside the busy section of the park, at the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro and offers the opportunity to enjoy breakfast in the open air with a view of the mountain right above you. Elephant tracking, stories and interaction is the speciality of this camp although joining in with the local Maasai is also an important activity. Our Mara camp is superb - the best guides in Kenya if not East Africa, 5 star game viewing in the heart of the Mara and wonderful hosting and company at meals. The camp itself has a prime position in the heart of the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Where is it?

Imagine a map of Kenya with black dots showing where the highest game concentrations are found. Imagine the blackest, most populated sections and you'll have found the two spots this safari travels to!

The Masai Mara on the Tanzanian/Serengeti border with Kenya in the south west and further to the south east on the same border at the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro - Amboseli National Park.

What is the best time of year to go?

What is the best time of year to go?

Temperately, the country varies from alpine climates in the higher regions to the tropical temperatures typical of the Indian Ocean beaches. The weather is predictable and considered dry - over most of the country there are two mild rainy seasons annually: the ‘Short’ rains from late October through November and the ‘Long’ rains which occur from late March to early June.

Generally speaking, in the Highlands the climate is cool particularly on the high peaks of Mt Kenya and other surprisingly high summits along the Rift Valley; at lower altitudes temperatures can reach approximately 35°C during the day; the coast is humid and balmy.

Rekero Camp

Rekero Camp

Situated in a prime site of the Masai Mara Game Reserve and close to the confluence of the Mara and Talek River, 10 mins from the main wildebeest crossings during the migration. Game viewing happens right from camp with some of the best cat viewings in Africa on the camp's doorstep.

An extremely eco-friendly camp, it is set up seasonally from June to October and December to March. At maximum the camp can fit 18 guests and is managed and hosted by Gerard and Rainee Beaton and Jackson Ole Looseyia of Big Cat Diary fame. The team of Maasai guides is one of the most enduring and experienced in East Africa, all accompanied by a delightful sense of humor.

All tents are spacious and en suite with excellent views into the bush and very attentive camp staff to bring hot water and luxury of luxuries - tea in the morning!

Camp is closed April, May and November

  • All the Maasai and Ildorobo guides live around the Mara and have a unique knowledge of the area

Ol Kanjau Camp

Ol Kanjau Camp

This traditional safari camp is based at the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro and just outside the main park (and away from the crowds). The camp is kept as simple as possible - basic tents with en suite bucket shower and long-drop toilet, paraffin lamps, simple furnishings.

Owned by the Kisongo Maasai pastoralists who benefit directly from all guest staying in the camp, the local community is an intergral part of camp life. The cattle move through the area with their young herdsmen, sometimes as young as 4yrs old! Mike and Judy Rainy manage the camp with great efficiency and extreme friendliness. Their true love are the 52 matriarchal elephant families in the area and this knowledge is shared with generosity.

The camp also has facilities for downloading and editing digital images and basic film together with battery charging facilities in the film tent. Again this is an extremely eco-friendly non-permanent camp and is taken down during rainy season (April, May and November), to allow the surrounds to return to their natural state for part of the year.

Camp is closed April, May and November

Activities to be enjoyed from camp:

  • Game drive
  • Bush walks
  • Mountain biking
  • Bird watching
  • Cultural visits to the nearby Maasai settlements
  • Following the movements of the matriach elephant families at close range

We suggest combining the safari with a visit to the Kenyan Coast for a few days. This could be on Lamu Island where there is more interaction with other people or a pristine and isolated beach lodge further up the coast.
