Laikipia Plateau, Lake Bogoria, Lake Baringo, Mt Elgon National Park and Kakamega Forest Reserve - 11 days/10 nights in Kenya.
A real dream for bird lovers especially. Start with a relaxing big game ranch stay before visiting millions of greater and lesser flamingoes on Lake Bogoria. Black-necked Grebe, Steppe Eagles, fish eagles and other raptors are commonly seen, moving on to Lake Baringo where 470 species of birds are found, many specific to the Rift Valley and northern Kenya. Mt Elgon offers volcanic lava tube caves and is home to cave dwelling elephants, forest birds and unusual mammals such as the bongo, giant forest hog and African golden cat.
The little known Kakamega Forest Reserve is the only remmant piece of the Congo forest in Kenya and here are found 350 species of forest tree and 300 species of birds. Flying squirrels, forest duikers, potto and many types of monkey are also found.

Where is it?
3 nights in a wilderness camp on the Laikipia Plateau. Enjoy viewing elephants, zebra, buffalo, big cats, spectacular birdlife with many northern Kenyan species seen here.
2 nights in Robert's Camp including a visit to Lake Bogoria famous for huge flocks of lesser flamingo and greater flamingo. Scenically breathtaking and almost free of tourists. It'll be a busy time as you'll also visit Lake Baringo, less spectacular but famous for the variety of birdlife found on the shores. Known as a top birding spot in Africa with 470 species.
2 nights camping in Mt Elgon National Park, second highest mountain in Kenya where the scenery is very dramatic. A 200m deep cave is home to elephants and waterfalls, gorges, mesas, calderas, hot springs are all discovered on foot. Very few tourists visit this park so there is a real feeling of wild Africa.
3 nights in cottage in Kakamega Forest reserve. Walking is the focus here with trail through the forest being very rewarding and include night walks to see potto, bush-babies and red-chested owlets.
What is the best time of year to go?
This trip departs between January and March, June and October with highly experienced professional safari guides.
How to get there
You'll fly on the scheduled flight from Nairobi to Nanuki where you'll be picked up and driven to the Laikipia Plateau (1.5hrs). This is a beautiful route passing Mt Kenya amongst other mountains and very scenic areas en route. At the end of the trip scheduled flight from Kisumu to Nairobi.
Tips and Notes
Accommodation is 8 nights in cottages/chalets/tented camps, 2 nights light-weight camping, all food, local drinks and laundry, flights from Nairobi to Nanyuki, Kisumu to Nairobi, road transfers in between.
