Mobile Safaris
Long distance driving on a mobile is typical and it can take anything between 2 to 6hrs and sometimes longer to travel between each spot. Style and comfort vary from basic, participation safaris where guests assist with setting up camp, cooking and washing up to luxury mobiles where the bedroom tents are en suite, beds have full mattresses and guests do not assist with camp activities.
A range of separate activities are usually included depending on the area the mobile is travelling in and may include boat trips, night drives, scenic flights or walks. In contrast to staying in different lodges for a couple of nights each, a mobile allows the opportunity to get to know the guide and staff on a continuous basis and through a wide range of experiences.
A less traditional mobile are those that use the same vehicle/driver guide to travel from lodge to lodge and these are more typical of safaris in Uganda. On arrival the driver/guide pick you up at the airport and both the vehicle and guide stay with you throughout the journey making use of different lodges along the route for night stops.
This is a marvellous way to travel from Kampala to Kibale Forest, onto Queen Elizabeth Park and down to the gorilas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The guide is usually chosen to suit different needs i.e. mainly big game interests or possibly primate interests. This is the same type of mobile typically used through Sossusvlei and Damaraland in Namibia.
