Shauna in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana

Hi Liz,

Sorry for the delay, side-tracked with the Christmas Holidays.

My trip was excellent!

Your suggestion of staying at Chobe Safari Lodge was definitely right on target. A beautiful lodge, the new areas are visually stunning, and functional, both. Food was definitely up to par, with delicious game dishes available nightly to try, along with a huge buffet spread at dinner and breakfast. Staff is excellent; room attendants, the front desk, and table service, smiles found all around. I was so glad to have stayed in one of the Rondavels, a tastefully appointed African-styled “hut”, without missing an amenity. Spaceous and unique, mine was located at the end of the group closest to the riverfront (#35), which also allowed me to observe an abundance of wildlife from my porch chair. A young male hippo currently resides just below the rondavel in the river, and was a continual source of laughs listening to him late in the evenings. The Chobe National Park area is amazingly full of wildlife, the lodge’s guides are intelligent, interesting, organized, humorous, and always have our safety concerns in mind. I’ll definitely be back to stay here and enjoy it all again!

The Zambezi Waterfront was ok, but starting to show some wear and age. A more casual atmosphere than at Chobe, staff was excellent, food decent. I was glad I stayed on the Zambia side of the falls, as well as the Zimbabwe side, because both sides are very different in feel, perspective, and local people’s attitudes. I found the Zimbabwe side much more accommodating, polite, slightly less cost, and much more interesting. If you were to visit only Zambia, you would miss about 75% of “seeing” all of the falls, at least in lower water season, when I visited the areas.

Another note….do try the river rafting, especially if you love water, it’s a gorgeous gorge, and thrilling trip, although very steep hike out of the canyon, once you’ve reached Rapid 23, our pull-out place…..a refreshing cold beer is your reward…..the Wild Horizon folks do their best to make it safe and sane! Kudo’s!!

Thank you, Liz, for your recommendations! I’ll be back in touch for future travels to Southern Africa. Hopefully sooner than later, within the next 3 years! Loved the countries, sights, people, and natural wonders. So much more to see!

Best to you in 2011,
