Serengeti migration action happens all year round. There’s no start and no end as it passes through East Africa’s plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara north of Ngorongoro Crater.

The Serengeti migration – how to get it right!

No year is the same either. It’s just a dynamic cycle of life as around 1.5 million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra move through the seasons. This is a great body of wild animals in search of food and water as it navigates around mountains and across rivers. They split up then congregate again through their breeding and foaling season.

This is really the “greatest show on earth”. Also one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. The annual wildebeest migration is very accessible but there are a few secrets on how to get it right.

Three Serengeti Secrets

There’s action happening every day of the year. But the changing seasons bring short rains, dry spells and then long rains. The migration gathers then moves then gathers again.

So do the tourist hordes at certain times of year. In the strangest of places a lot of the time too!

Here’s the key…

  • Be in the right places.
  • Visit at the right time of year.
  • Get into the company of some of Africa’s top safari guides.

The Serengeti, the Mara and Beyond

East Africa offers immense habitat diversity across great plains, up volcanic peaks into deep rift valleys.

  • But there’s lots more in Tanzania and Kenya.
  • From desolate frontier lands up further north down to remote and wild places deeper in the south.
  • There’s more again too in Ethiopia.
  • Also Uganda and Rwanda.

East Africa is a naturalist’s paradise, an adventurer’s playground. It’s wide screen Africa at its best.

Don’t short change yourself when planning a safari into East Africa. Do your research. Ask questions.

Find out more about the Serengeti Migration

  • See how the annual wildebeest migration works. What it’s all about. In theory and in practice. See a map of the wider Serengeti eco-system. Also where the migration is found through the seasons. Find out where and when to catch the famous “river crossings” on the Grumeti and Mara Rivers. Understand how the “short” and the “long” rains in Tanzania and Kenya affect the migration and its annual movement. Find out when the best times to see the migration occur. Understand where the best places are to see the Serengeti migration. Figure out how to deal with the crowds or better still, how to avoid them altogether.
  • Explore other safaris in Tanzania. Trips that go beyond the traditional northern circuit down south to Selous and Ruaha. Also into the remoter parts of Katavi and Mahale in western Tanzania.
  • Consider safaris in Kenya that go beyond the Masai Mara. Into the Laikipia, Meru and Northern Frontier District. Where families and friends find secret spots away from the regular tourist crowds.
  • Look at a few sample migration safaris. That make use of some of Africa’s best safari guides, in the quietest places where wildlife is plentiful through the seasons.

Crocodiles don’t have the biggest brains but wildebeest aren’t the brightest creatures roaming the Serengeti and Mara either. Here gnu meets log whilst migrating across the Mara River, Tanzania.
