Meet the Zimbabwe Safari Guides…
Washington was born in Hwange town which is outside of Hwange National Park. He began his guiding career at Camp Hwange where he’s worked since 2013. Chances are, if you book to stay at Camp Hwange, Washington could well be your guide.
During his career he has had many wildlife experiences as you can imagine. One particular incident he recalls was “watching wild dogs hunting a wildebeest calf and the mother of the calf put up such a fight! An incredible experience.”
It goes without saying that Hwange National Park is his favourite place.
What’s his bucket list wildlife encounter? To see gorillas in Rwanda.
Mayeso was born in Norton, which is a small town close to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. When he was 9 years old, Mayeso and his family moved to Hwange National Park when his father started working as a National Park Ranger in the park. So he spent much of his childhood at Hwange Main Camp which is at the entrance to the Hwange National Park, where he attended both the primary and secondary schools.
After completing his Ordinary level at school, Mayeso worked for National Parks doing some general work, creating fire breaks and working on the roads and fire guards. He also worked for the Water authority in the park. He then moved on to African Bush Camps where he was employed as a waiter at Somalisa Camp in Hwange where he combined his job with studying to be a guide. with his professional qualification in place, Mayeso joined the guiding department at African Bushcamps.
So, after a short season working in South Africa at Karkloof Safari Spa at Pietermarizburg near Durban, he returned to join the Amalinda Safari Collection where he currently works. Inspired by his father’s work in the Research Department at Hwange National Park, Mayeso’s hard work has paid off. Finally, today he is a keen birder and passionate photographer, and enjoys taking photos of wildlife and sharing his passion with his guests.
