Buffalo Safaris

About Buffalo Safaris - Kariba, Zimababwe

Buffalo Safaris, established in 1983 by Hans and Val van der Heiden, is a family run multiple safari operation based in Kariba, northern Zimbabwe.

The Victoria Falls, (or Mosi-oa-Tunya as the locals call it) is nurtured by the mighty Zambezi River, and 209 Km downstream, it also gives life to another wilderness wonderland, Lake Kariba. 'Operation Noah,' a famous wildlife rescue operation, took place here from 1959 to 1963. Hundreds of wild animals were moved to safety as the new lake levels rose. Elephants, Buffalo, Black Rhino, Lions, Leopards along with numerous other wildlife were saved, and most were moved to the Matusadona National Park. This unique African wilderness setting is home to numerous safari activities. The popular 'adventure' Canoeing Safaris on the Lower Zambezi River, from Kariba to Chirundu past Mana Pools to Kanyemba, provides for conservation tourism (Ecotourism) to the now famous Zambezi Valley and Lake Kariba. Tourists, including ornithologists, anglers (fishing for Tiger Fish), backpackers, and photographers, are attracted to the unspoiled natural wilderness ecosystems in the region.

Buffalo Safaris, comprising Zambezi Canoeing, Lake Wilderness Safaris, Sunset Lodge Guest House, and Kariba Kushinga Safari Lodge and Camp / Caravan park, provides many facilities. These include: -

Comfortable rooms with 'en suite' facilities on a rustic houseboat based at Lake Wilderness;

Quality self-catering accommodation at Kushinga Safari Lodge and Sunset Lodge in Kariba Town;

Mobile lightweight tented facilities while on Zambezi Canoe Safaris;

Budget accommodation at Lake Wilderness in the Matusadona National Park. Camping and caravaning at Kushinga in Kariba Town.

Most important is the ability to enjoy the wilderness aspect of the area where visitors can enjoy photo safaris; game viewing by speedboat, pontoon, and from canoes; game walks; sunbathing; and a host of other activities. Cultural safaris can be arranged, as well as overland safaris through Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and South Africa. Astronomy is popular with clubs.

Professionally trained guides, amongst the best in Africa, expertly take care of guests on wildlife and other safari activities.

The fauna and flora is ideally suited to the hot climate. The rainy months are in the hot summer from November to March. The winter months are from May to mid-August, with October considered the hottest month of the year.

For your next adventure, if it's good food you are after, personalised guiding while walking with African Big Game, Safari costs to suit your pocket, or a relaxed outdoor atmosphere, Buffalo Safaris is available to you.

It is recommended that advice on Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia visas and embassies, health, money, customs and immigration, maps, travel information, etc. be gleaned from the internet, or from the 'Lonely Planet travel survival kit.'
