Alternative climbing routes

Alternative climbing routes

Any reasonably fit person could reach the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro with a bit of preparation. There are several routes available some of which we've illustrated below in more detail. You will need a minimum of 5 days for the hike (preferably six or more to allow for climatisation). You'll ascend through tropical forests, then heath land to alpine desert before reaching the permanent glaciers and the summit, Uhuru Peak. There are regular departures for individuals or groups.

Umbwe Route via Barafu

6 day hike plus 2 nights at base camp.

One of the least utilised routes up the mountain. This is probably the most beautiful route by which to
ascend the mountain, and is significantly shorter than the other routes, whilst having good
acclimatisation time. It also makes the distances covered between overnights at altitude shorter and
avoids a lot of the crowding experienced in some sites in season. A variation on this route with
additional nights to acclimatise is needed if guests wish to overnight in the crater.

Rongai / Lemosho routes

Ladies only and solo climbers

Single room supplements at the hotel, single tent supplement on the mountain and solo climber supplement i.e. to climb privately and not as part of a group.  Should it be the latter we'll endeavour to  join a solo climber with other guests but cannot guarantee a group departure. Generally Saturday arrival, Sunday climb is the most popular and we can more easily match up with other guests.

We also offer ladies only and singles only group departures to accommodate those falling into these categories.
