Daily itinerary

This itinerary includes some transfers by road as well as by air. Ethiopia's improved airports allow easier access to the further away sites such as Axum and Lalibela.

Accommodation is in three or four star hotels throughout the duration of the safari. An upgrade to the Hilton Hotel in Addis Ababa can be offered at an extra cost of US$114.00 per twin room or US$96.00 per single room.

The price includes US$560.00 per person for flights which are subject to change.

Day to day itinerary

Day 1:  Arrival

Upon arrival you will be welcomed by your guide and driven about 15 minutes to your hotel.                     

Overnight at Ghion or Global Hotel (4*) (BB)

Day 2: Route: Addis – Bahir Dar

In the morning, fly from Addis to the lake side town of Bahir Dar. After check-in and breakfast at Tana Hotel, you'll make a boat trip on Ethiopia’s largest water body, Lake Tana (3,600 sq km) to visit the monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Mariam which are found on the largest peninsula of the lake. These monasteries are known for the colorful frescoes of religious scenes, and an impressive display of illuminated bibles written in Ge’ez, Ethiopia’s oldest language. Then, drive back to Bahir Dar for lunch.

In the afternoon, drive 32 km southwest of Bahir Dar to the small town of Tiss Abay and we walk for twenty minutes to visit the famous Blue Nile Falls. The fall plunges 45 meters below, giving rise to steam clouds, smoke for fire, which is locally known as ‘Tiss Issat’. Walk about 20 minutes to an interesting viewpoint.

Day 3: Route: Bahir Dar – Gondar

Fly from Bahir Dar to Gondar, the 17th and 18th century capital of Ethiopia. In Gondar, visit the ‘Royal Compound’ with many majestic castles constructed in the European middle age architectural style, the ‘Bath of Emperor Fasilades’, and finally Debre Birhan Sillassie church (‘Trinity at the mount of light’ ) which is the finest of the Gonderine churches. It was built during the reign of Emperor Iyasu (1682 - 1706). The inside walls of the front room are covered with paintings on cloth, glued to the surface. The ceiling is built with thick beams and it is decorated with winged angel heads looking down. The wall paintings depict scenes from the life of Christ, and Mary.

Day 4: Route: Gondar – Lalibela

After breakfast, transfer in to airport for your flight to Lalibela that is home to the 12th century handy carved rock churches of King Lalibela (1181 - 1221) whom the town is named after.
After lunch in your hotel, visit the first group churches of Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site) which are found northeast of a stream named ‘River Jordan’.

Overnight: Roha Hotel (3* hotel) (B, L, D)

Day 5: Lalibela

In the morning, you'll enjoy a mule back ride to the hill top semi monolithic church of Asheten Mariam (13th Century AD). The peak of the hill offers a wonderful viewpoint to have bird eye view of the surrounding area including the town of Lalibela. In the afternoon, visit the second and the third group of churches of Lalibela.

Day 6: Route: Lalibela – Axum

Fly from Lalibela to Axum- the most ancient capital of Ethiopia.
This morning, visit the Archeological museum of Axum and the Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion, which is believed to be the last resting place of the Original Ark of the Covenant.
In the afternoon, visit the famous ‘Stele field’ (4th Century AD and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruined palace and tomb of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskel (5th and 6th Century AD) and the residence of the legendary Queen of Sheba (9th century BC).

Overnight: Yeha or Remahai Hotel (3* hotel) (B, L, D)

Day 7: Route: Axum – Addis

Fly back to Addis and have a leisure time in Addis which can be spent in walking at the most famous street in Addis – Churchill Street, named after Winston Churchill of England as he helped Ethiopia to regain its independence from the Fascist Italian occupation. This street is famous for its antique shops.

Overnight: Global or Ghion Hotel (4* Hotel) (BB)

Day 8: Addis + departure

Have a sightseeing tour of Addis that includes visiting Museums, Monuments, Churches, Market and Mount Entoto for the panoramic view of the city. In the evening, you will be guest with your guide at one of the best traditional restaurants of Addis to see the folkloric dances of the Ethiopian people and to taste the variety of meals of the Ethiopian people.
