Mauritius

Mauritius

The island of Mauritius is renowned as the only known home of the dodo which of course has been extinct since the mid to late 17th Century. Related to pigeons and doves, it was surprisingly tall, nearly 1m, flightless and lived on fruit.

Mauritius has a rich culture based around Creole, Chinese, European and Indian influences. Cuisine is usually a mixture of dishes from these cultures although the music is usually based around slavery and freedom for blacks with its roots in African rythms.

Rum is one of the products of the islands sugar cane plantations and other local produce includes spices namely vanilla, nutmeg and saffron (which are much more economical to buy on the island than in the western world)!

A little known fact is that Mauritius was only the 5th country in the world to issue postage stamps in 1847. The post office issued a "Red Penny" and a "Blue Two Pence" probably the two most valuable stamps in the world.

Mauritius is a tropical island with lots to do in addition to the beach activities. If you'd like something less "busy" and more isolated, look to Reunion Island or some of the great beaches on Madagascar. The Seychelles offers the most supreme of our beaches.
