Mutinondo Wilderness
The Mutinondo Wilderness is a large tract of land under private management near the top of the towering Muchinga escarpment. A kaleidoscope of rocky outcrops, rivers and streams with lovely waterfalls, rolling woodlands and grassy dambos, this is a stunning area and little known to boot; a genuinely off the beaten track sort of place.
The Muchinga Escarpment separates the central plateau of North-East Zambia with the low-lying Luangwa Valley, the southern portion of the great African Rift Valley. The Luangwa (in particular the North Luangwa National Park) is known to host some of the best walking safaris in Africa, and the South Luangwa is historically the origin of this African tradition.
This is not a big game viewing area but is an exciting initiative with the local community. Activities include boating on the rivers, bird watching and guided geological tours.
Accommodation is in brick under thatch chalets on a working farm, where the owners have set aside a vast portion of the farm for conservation.
