White buffalo calves - 3 April 2014
There have been sporadic reports about white buffalo calves in the Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, Jejane Game Reserve and the Mopani areas surrounding Kruger National Park over the last few years.
The first report on Thornybush was in March 2011 when a single white calf was born into a large breeding herd.
Shortly after, two more white calves were reported elsewhere on the reserve.
There where no more reports of this phenomena, until late 2013, when a calf with a white band across the middle of its body was born.
The latest pure white calf was seen early in March 2014. The little male seems perfectly healthy and happy (despite looking a little bit different to the other members of his herd).
As far as we can gather, it is a type of leucism, caused by a recessive gene. With age, the white calves progress to a creamy white, then light brown, and finally the dark hide of a normal adult buffalo.
