Off Beat Explorations

Go beyond the obvious with some explorations on less travelled paths in Africa’s wildest and most rewarding wilderness areas

There are many well known areas in Africa and then, there are those hidden places which inspire adventurers to head off with camera and notebook to hand.

Despite a long history of tourism in Africa, much of the continent is still relatively unexplored by travellers. An off the beaten track exploration can make for a truly exciting and rewarding holiday.

Our African expeditions are planned by our Africa experts, well ahead and on set departure dates. Rest assured you’re not on your own, we use highly experienced professional specialist safari guides supported by locally based experts and trackers. Routes can stumble upon forgotten cultures and primitive villagers – a real African adventure!

For starters, try exploring remote Katavi National Park, a true wilderness in western Tanzania. Enough to excite the most experienced  of Africa goers. The park is home to masses of game with huge herds of elephant and buffalo roaming the plains. Try combining Katavi with Mahale NP on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Dramatically different with clear waters, rugged peaks and an impressive population of chimpanzees.

Head to Zambia, explore the rarely visited Bangwuelu Swamps home to the sought-after shoebill, or the vast Liuwa Plains where Africa’s second largest wildebeest migration takes place.

For a safari with a difference try hiking or strolling along the beaches of Sao Tome Island in Gabon or a dhow safari to the untouched and uninhabited islands of Mozambique’s stunning Quirimbas Archipelago. Or visit Ethiopia and meet the ancient tribes of the remote Omo Valley.

Give it a try… Africa’s remote destinations have plenty to offer

These trips may not always be as smooth as those to more familiar destinations – the camps and lodges perhaps not as luxurious – but the experience of discovering raw Africa will be unforgettable. You’ll need to plan well ahead, though, because of logistics and limited accommodation.
