Where is it?
Akagera National Park is in the east of Rwanda and within a 2hr drive from the capital Kigali. Akagera lies on the border with Tanzania and is one of the few parks left in Rwanda where big game abound. After visiting Akagera the safari drives north to the Parc National des Volcans, a volcanic region where the last remaining mountain gorillas have found refuge.
The final part of the safari is a visit to the southern Rwandan park of Nyungwe Forest, a little known or visited park where a number of primate species are undergoing attempts to habituate them.
What is the best time of year to go?
It is possible to visit Rwanda at any time of the year; however certain times are better for certain activities. The best time for tracking gorillas and biking is the dry seasons from June to September, whilst for photographers the wet season is best as there is less haze and more greenery. This is also the best time to track chimpanzees in the Nyungwe National Park. November to March is the best time for birding as flocks of migratory birds join the native species.
