The Mountain Gorilla Trek in Uganda

The quickest and simplest way to do a mountain gorilla trek – anywhere!

Here’s our standard 4 day gorilla safari from Entebbe. We fly in and out, stay in a comfortable and convenient lodge within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and spend 3 days on safari – one gorilla permit is included, there’s time for a second trek and a time to explore the forests.

  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
  • 4 days/3 nights

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is successful – as good as 100%, if  you miss them on the first day then you’ll still have two further days to get it right!

Highlights of the Mountain Gorilla Trek

We’ll take a private charter flight from Entebbe to the Bwindi airstrip for our 3 night gorilla safari. Hosting is first class and the guides are local experts.

You’ll discover more than just gorillas during this short stay in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The trek itself could take a full day but everything comes down to the single hour that you’re permitted to stay with the gorilla group. Take loads of photos but then put your camera down. Make sure that you spend most of your time absorbing the full context of the gorilla experience.

We take care of your flights and permits (we recommend a 2nd optional permit) and you’ll receive full advice on your packing list and what to bring.

When’s the best time to see mountain gorillas?

  • All year round but we recommend advance planning in the popular “high season” from May to September when permits and accommodation are at a premium or in short supply.
  • June to August are usually the driest months offering easier treks but you could have soft rain at any time.
  • Conditions can be tougher in the “wet seasons” during March/April and October/November.

Other gorilla trekking options

  • If mountain gorilla trekking is your main interest then speak to us about a trip combined with the Virunga gorillas in Rwanda.
  • If you’re after more than just gorillas then think about a more complete Uganda safari…
  • If you’re up for more intrepid travel then chat to us about the lowland gorilla trekking in Congo and elsewhere in Central Africa.

A note on costs for this trip

Our online prices are based on a typical trip running in low season. So what you see is a “from” price. In all cases we’ll provide a custom itinerary with detailed inclusions and exclusions. Every trip is different and when we quote we ensure that there are no hidden costs.

In the case of gorilla treks, permits are pre-booked but only secured once full payment has been received. It’s important that there’s no delay in the booking and final confirmation process when flight, accommodation and permit options are being juggled. Especially during high season when the demand for permits often exceeds supply.

How to get there

This is a fly-in safari and private charters are arranged from Entebbe International Airport to the Bwindi airstrip. Please let you Zambezi consultant know if you would like us to organise your international flights.

Mountain Gorillas
The largest of the primates and rarest of the 3 gorilla subspecies. These critically endangered giants of which only around 700 remain are restricted to small pockets of moist forests in the mountains and volcanoes along the borders of south west Uganda, north west Rwanda and eastern DRC. The habituated mountain gorilla groups of Rwanda and Uganda are the most rewarding.

Bwindi birds
The ancient forests of Bwindi provide habitats for 347 bird species including 7 IUCN red data listed bird species plus 24 of the total 25 Albertine Rift endemics found in Uganda. The Buhoma Waterfall Trail, the bamboo-zone and the Mubwindi Swamp trail found in Ruhija are especially rewarding. It’s not unusual to check off over 100 different species with a local guide between gorilla treks.

L’Hoest’s monkey
These bearded mountain monkeys are among the most attractive of all primates with a brilliant white ruff framing deeply set orange eyes within a delicate black face. These cheeky crop raiders are found in small groups dominated by females with a single adult male. The male is around twice the size of the females, generally loud and proud and easily recognised by his bright blue scrotum.
