Mountain gorilla trek in Uganda

This is the simplest mountain gorilla trek option in East Central Africa. Discover more than just gorillas during this short stay in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The safari starts in Entebbe. Fly down to Kihihi airstrip, where you’ll be collected and transferred to a comfortable lodge within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. You’ll spend 4 days down in this fascinating area with one gorilla permit included in the price. There’s time for a second gorilla trek and a time to explore the forest and community. Fly back to Entebbe at the end.

  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
  • 4 days/3 nights
  • Mountain gorilla trekking
  • Meet the local community

Our sighting success rate with these awesome apes in the Bwindi forest is high. In the unlikely event that you miss gorillas on the first day then you’ll still have another day to try again.

Highlights of the Mountain Gorilla Trek

  • Save time with a private charter flight from Entebbe to the Kihihi airstrip for our 3 night gorilla safari.
  • Hosting is warm and friendly; the guides are local experts.
  • The trek itself could take a full day. Everything comes down to the single hour that you’re permitted to stay with the gorilla group.
  • Take loads of photos but then put your camera down. Make sure you spend most of your time absorbing the full context of the gorilla experience.

When’s the best time to visit Bwindi?

  • Treks take place all year round but we recommend advance planning in the popular “high season” from June to September and January to February when permits and accommodation are at a premium or in short supply.
  • July to October & January and February are usually the driest months offering easier treks but you could have soft rain at any time.
  • Conditions can be tougher in the “wet seasons” during April/May and November.

Other gorilla trekking options

  • Combine a Uganda gorilla trek with our easy gorillas in Rwanda and climb the Rwandan slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes looking for mountain gorillas.
  • If you’re after more than just gorillas then think about our classic Uganda safari.
  • For unique and off beat travel try our Odzala Kokoua adventure in Congo Brazzaville. (Here we’re in search of western lowland gorillas - our success rate is 100%).
  • The eastern DRC is where we run our Virunga safari for mountain gorillas with (when the situation in DRC is stable) an opportunity to hike and overnight on the rim of Nyiragongo volcano too.

Tips and notes

A note on costs for this trip

Our online prices are based on a typical trip running in low season. So what you see is a “from” price. In all cases we’ll provide a custom itinerary with detailed inclusions and exclusions. Every trip is different and when we quote we ensure that there are no hidden costs.

In the case of gorilla treks, permits are pre-booked but only secured once full payment has been received. It’s important that there’s no delay in the booking and final confirmation process when flight, accommodation and permit options are being juggled. Especially during high season when the demand for permits often exceeds supply.

How to get there

This is a fly-in safari and private charters are arranged from Entebbe International Airport to the Bwindi airstrip. Please let you Zambezi consultant know if you would like us to organise your international flights.

Mountain Gorillas
The largest of the primates and rarest of the 3 gorilla subspecies. These critically endangered giants of which only around 700 remain are restricted to small pockets of moist forests in the mountains and volcanoes along the borders of south west Uganda, north west Rwanda and eastern DRC. The habituated mountain gorilla groups of Rwanda and Uganda are the most rewarding.

Bwindi birds
The ancient forests of Bwindi provide habitats for 347 bird species including 7 IUCN red data listed bird species plus 24 of the total 25 Albertine Rift endemics found in Uganda. The Buhoma Waterfall Trail, the bamboo-zone and the Mubwindi Swamp trail found in Ruhija are especially rewarding. It’s not unusual to check off over 100 different species with a local guide between gorilla treks.

L’Hoest’s monkey
These bearded mountain monkeys are among the most attractive of all primates with a brilliant white ruff framing deeply set orange eyes within a delicate black face. These cheeky crop raiders are found in small groups dominated by females with a single adult male. The male is around twice the size of the females, generally loud and proud and easily recognised by his bright blue scrotum.

West Tanzania Explorer

"I have just returned from my vacation to West Tanzania to Ngorogoro Crater, Serengeti, and Zanzibar that you arranged for me. Everything was absolutely perfect. There were no problems whatsoever. Everything was perfectly arranged and there were absolutely no hiccups along the way..."
