Canoeing on the Upper Zambezi River has become an extremely popular activity. The river above the Falls has a beauty of its own. It does not have the panoramas of the Lower Zambezi but it boasts a more varied fauna and flora with picturesque islands, narrow channels and a few white water rapids.
Upper Zambezi Canoe Safaris are operated on the 70km stretch of the Zambezi River between Katambora and Victoria Falls. Katambora is approximately 10km down river from the Botswana border where the Zambezi enters Zimbabwe and runs alongside the Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe and the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia. Canoe safaris in Zambia are operated from Safari Par Excellences' Lodge and estate - Thorntree.
PHYSICAL FEATURES OF THE RIVER
This section of the river is quite unlike the better know section below Lake Kariba. The Upper Zambezi River is regarded as "free flow" as it is not controlled by a dam and as such the water level is subject to seasonal variation. Floods begin in December and normally peak in April/May. Therefore throughout the season the route varies as new channels open with the rise in water level. The Upper Zambezi has numerous heavily wooded islands which are dissected by channels that may be several kilometres in length and vary in width from one to twenty metres.
Vegetation predominantly consists of Ebonies, Water Berries, Palms and a tremendous variety of Acacia and Albizia. Water throughout the season is clean and clear, particularly from July onwards. The rapids encountered are small and at their peak are only classed as grade 2, which is the second easiest grade. The easiest being rated as grade 1.
Zambian canoeing safaris pass through the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where clients have a good opportunity of viewing White Rhino, the only concentration on the Zambezi River. Zimbabwean canoe trips are conducted along the Zambezi National Park shoreline which is abundant in wildlife.
