The "new" Sanyati Lodge nestles in the rugged foothills of the Matusadona range overlooking the vast eastern basin of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe.

The lodge was reopened early in 1998 following a complete renovation and rebuild of the old site. The new management and operations team at the safari lodge delivers personalised yet unobtrusive attention and impeccable service. We therefore consider Sanyati Lodge to be one of the best safari lodges in the Zambezi Valley for clients seeking that added luxury and comfort whilst on safari. In particular, we recommend Sanyati Lodge to all of our Honeymoon couples.

Sanyati Lodge's location on the eastern side of the Sanyati Gorge offers easy access to Matusadona National Park, renowned for it's appeal as a quiet and secluded wilderness area with an abundance of game and prolific birdlife. Matusadona is well recognised for its concentration of lion and for the fact that it's one of the last remaining wild sanctuaries of the endangered black rhino.

The Lodge

The entire lodge has been skillfully designed to blend in with the rugged Matusadona landscape with a minimal disruption to the trees and rock formations. Natural stone walls, rough plaster, thatch and local timbers have been used in the construction of the safari lodge so that it merges quietly into the wild surroundings. The large and spacious central lounge and dining area is located in a grove of shady trees with an excellent view onto Lake Kariba. The pool is located just below the dining room and lounge and includes a comfortable bar area and large timber viewing deck which overlooks a natural water feature. The complex includes a small curio shop and a library with satellite television for those who need to keep abreast of international news and sporting events. The Sanyati team treats every visitor to the lodge as a special guest. The food is well prepared and excellent wines are served to ensure that none of the luxuries of a memorable safari are missing.

Accommodation at Sanyati Lodge

Sanyati Lodge has 11 finely appointed luxury rooms set into the mountain behind and on either side of the main lounge and dining complex - 9 twins, a Presidential Suite and Honeymoon Suite. Each accommodation lodge is surrounded by natural gardens offering absolute privacy with undisturbed views through large glass panes opening onto a timber deck. The air-conditioned interiors are cool and gracious. Each bathroom is glass fronted offering a fine view through trees and across the lake from the bathtub itself. An open air shower with similar views leads off each bathroom. Each room includes a well stocked mini bar - ideal for enjoying a quiet and private sundowner on the wooden deck whilst watching the magnificent sunsets for which Kariba has become so well known.

Activities at Sanyati Lodge

Matusadona itself is considered to be one of the finest wilderness areas in Africa for walking and photographic safaris. This is really one of the highlights of Sanyati Lodge. Aside from the opportunity to view big game on foot, the area has a fascinating variety of insects, plants, small mammals, reptiles and birds. Game drives and boat cruises are also conducted on the flood plains and shoreline where the game congregates. The Sanyati Gorge is a quiet and brooding ravine well known for its interest to birding enthusiasts and is best explored by canoe. This area is also a prime location for angling enthusiasts in pursuit of the famed Tiger Fish - considered by many to be, pound for pound, the hardest fighting freshwater fish in the world.

Access to Sanyati Lodge

Sanyati Lodge is reached by a 1 hour boat transfer across the lake from Kariba Town or alternatively with the Float Plane by special arrangement.

Post script: The traditional safari season in Zimbabwe is during our dry winter from July to mid November. In Matusadona, there is an abundance of shoreline grazing (panicum repens) throughout the year making Sanyati Lodge a year round safari venue.
