Hidden high in a Mopane outcrop at the mouth of the Ume River, Kipling's commands spectacular views of the nearby Matusadona Mountains and magical Lake Kariba. Shearwater's new luxury safari lodge's surroundings draw wildlife to feed and drink, and its design provides an unbeatable platform to view the exquisite sunsets the lake is renowned for. From this idyllic location visitors have ample opportunity to enjoy in full, all that Kariba has to offer.

Top architect Ivan Pantic designed Kipling's - it has been built in harmony with the environment. Kipling's interiors, which have been tastefully designed by Belinda Jones, are uniquely vibrant and colourful. Kipling's caters for its guests in ten twin-thatched chalets, each with its own private view of the lake, river or Matusadona Mountains.

There are no cropped lawns, leaving natural bush to grow right up to the chalets. The chalets have eight metre high, steep-pitched roofs for cooling, and a private outside deck where guests can sit and enjoy the scenery. The honeymoon suite, with its extra lodge bath, bar fridge and intercom for room service, occupies the prime viewing site.

The main lodge, with its eleven metre high roof, houses the dining room, bar, splash pool, reception and kitchen. This circular building has an upstairs seating area from which the views are most spectacular. There is a wooden deck encircling the front of the main lodge which provides a perfect place for guests to relax and sip cool drinks while appreciating the splendour of Lake Kariba. Bridge, chess, backgammon and a library are available

Safari activities are carried out in the game-rich Matusadona National Park. This is one of the few remaining refuges of the endangered black rhino. Activities include:

  • Half- and full-day game drives in the Matusadona National Park.

  • Morning game walks with an armed professional guide.

  • Afternoon canoe trips along the shores of the Ume River.

  • Fishing for the well known tiger fish and bream (all equipment is supplied).

  • Pontoon cruises and boat safaris for game viewing and relaxing.

  • A game hide for close-up animal viewing.

  • Scenic flights over Lake Kariba and Matusadona National Park are offered at an extra cost.
