A good trip to Zimbabwe

A good trip, well organised and without any problems (as always!!!).

Spent 2 nights Ilala , 5 nights Bomani and 10 nights Musango

Travel

Flights all went well from start to finish really. No problems except that the homeward Kulula flight from JNB to CTN was 20 minutes behind schedule and we had to depart Bumi Hills over 2 hours early because of impending bad weather leaving a long wait in VFA, but these things happen and better to be gone than stuck at Musango.

All the pre-arranged transport with the various tour companies went without a hitch.

The Elephant Express was a worthwhile excursion and it was a novel way of getting to Bomani. Graham and I even got to drive the train!!!!!! Some game viewing en route and lunch at Dete before we set off. A recommended way to get down to Bomani/Camelthorn to save the long drive.

Accommodation

Outlook Lodge was, as usual, excellent and Francois looked after us like he always does. We had a nice meal there as well and transport to/from JNB Airport was all organised. No problems experienced. Carol and Graham picked up early morning off the Emirates flight.

Ilala Lodge was far superior to Vic Falls Hotel. We had a lovely room facing the Falls. Service was excellent and so were the dinners and breakfasts. Centrally located for the town.

Bomani Lodge was very comfortable. We had a very nice room (Spurwing Tent 3). Spacious, comfortable and clean. We were greeted by a Tiger Snake in the bathroom!!!!!!! Food was fine and varied although brunch only alternated daily between a breakfast and a light lunch. Staff always on hand to get us a drink of some shape or form. Sean was there to start with and Desme and Warren returned before we left.

Musango Safari Camp was at it’s best as always. We had Room 7 with the plunge pool. Food was excellent and varied and always nicely presented. Staff there are always on top form for us, especially as we have been going there for many years. Nothing changes and it is what it is – a safari camp not a 5-star luxury hotel with Spa.

Activities

Sundowner Cruise from Ilala was very nice. We were looked after very well with drinks and snacks and the weather was lovely. Plenty to see including elephants at close-range. Travelled with some nice people too.

Helicopter ride with Bonisair was a real treat for our daughter and husband and they enjoyed the views. They got an extra 5 minutes as the cloud was low initially and with so many choppers working the pilot returned for safety.

Gorges Lodge was a view to behold for our daughter and son-in-law and we had a nice lunch there as well.

Siduli Hide was pretty quiet but then sometimes these places are. Still they enjoyed the 2 hour sit and we did get to see some animals.

Our guide at Bomani was Harris Mupedzi. He was very good and worked hard to find animals. 2 prides of Lions, Painted Dogs, Porcupines, Honey Badgers, Elephants and the usual Zebra, Buffalo and Wildebeest. Our highlight was to watch the birth of a Wildebeest. Even found a Dusky Lark (lifer) and an African Broadbill at the camp (out of area). Despite the rains we had good viewing of animals but no leopard.

Musango was as good as ever and needs no further comments really!!!!!!

Overall impression

A good trip, well organised and without any problems (as always!!!). Carol and Graham were very impressed as it was their first time here. A good choice of centres to do and see what we thought they would like.
